About Columbia

This is the first post in what is to become a series of posts about Columbia, Missouri. I call this place home. It is where my friends are, it's where I filed my census report when I first started college and where I now live with the man that I love doing work that I enjoy.

I never thought I would get to this point.

I'm from Kansas City, Missouri, and since leaving there for college here in Columbia, I have seen my share of cities. So, I always thought I would leave. From LA to Seattle, NY to Miami. Every city had its charms. Its own pulse. LA was all action, and fabulously so. In NY, it was grind, grit and getting where you needed to go-- my midwest stroll was unwelcome on sidewalks and subways alike.

But something was always 'stopping' me from leaving Columbia. Really, it came down to this:

Nothing compares to the pulse of this city for me. Columbia pulls off a cultural balancing act in a way other cities don't.

A balance between real country living and urban life. Local and national. Young and old. Conservative and liberal. Learning and poetry. Book shops and rock shows.

It's a cultural hub, and on first glance it's a total accident. Who put this little gem in the middle of Missouri?

But the closer you look, you find the people with purpose behind the events, the actions, the protests and the parties that occur here. The people who love this city, love what they do and have worked to help it grow.

With the help of my very journalistic curiosity, I plan on sharing my experiences in Columbia, Missouri.

Whether it's food, trails, concerts, booze, or underground cultures, I'll share what I love about CoMo, and I hope you'll share with me too.
